Two of Hooley’s Consumer Protection Ideas to Be Made Law
Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Darlene Hooley (OR-5) will join her colleagues in passing the Conference Report of H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which includes a ban on dangerous phthalates in children’s toys and child care products that derived from legislation sponsored by California Senator Diane Feinstein and Hooley.  The measure will await the signature from the President to become law.

Phthalates are chemicals added to common plastic products to make them soft and pliable. They are found in a variety of children’s toys and childcare products that are frequently put in a child’s mouth, such as teethers, rubber ducks, and soft books.  Phthalates interfere with the functioning of the hormone system, and have been linked to certain defects in reproductive organs. Young children are particularly vulnerable.

Hooley Joins Colleagues in Support of the Nation’s Veterans
Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Washington, D.C. -  Today, Congresswoman Darlene Hooley (OR-05) will join with her colleagues in the House of Representatives in passing a number of bills in support of veterans across the country.  The House is expected to approve eight veterans bills this evening.

H.R.1527, the Rural Veterans Access to Health Care Act allows veterans who are in areas where there isn’t readily available access to VA facilities to seek treatment from local, non-VA providers in their community.

“It’s wrong to make our disabled veterans, who have already spent an extended period of time away from their homes defending our country, return home only to force them to travel again to seek the treatment they need,” Hooley said.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Washington, D.C. -  Today Congresswoman Darlene Hooley (OR-05) joined with her colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Committee in approving several bills, including H.R.2851, “Michelle’s Law” which passed the committee by a vote of 40 to 0 to 2.  The bill next goes before the full U.S. House of Representatives for its approval.

H.R.2851 ensures that college students who are covered under their parents health care plans do not lose their benefits if they become sick or injured and need to take a medical leave of absence from school.  This bill specifically applies to any students who are in a postsecondary education institution and take a necessary medical leave of absence, which would require certification by the treating doctor.

Washington, DC – This afternoon, leading supporters of key Medicare legislation rallied with seniors and military members calling for enactment of the bill into law without delay.  The House and Senate passed the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act by overwhelming majorities to reverse a planned 10.6 percent physician payment cut that could block access to health care for seniors on Medicare and military families using the TRICARE system.  President Bush vetoed the bill today, requiring both chambers of Congress to vote on whether to override the veto and make the bill law.  The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services began implementing the cuts fully today.
